Building a programme
A strong programme rarely contains many tunes. Two to four well-chosen pieces at the right moments make more impression than a long sequence. At a wedding, a march for the guests arriving, a slow air during an intimate moment and a lively set on the way out usually covers the whole day.
For funerals and remembrance ceremonies the emphasis is on restrained material. Amazing Grace is the best-known choice, but there are slow airs and laments that are heard far less often and therefore feel more personal, especially where there is a connection with Scotland, Ireland or the armed forces.
For corporate events and festivities recognisability and energy matter more: marches and reels with clear rhythm, played at moments that ask for attention such as an opening, an unveiling or the arrival of a group.
